Making your own hummus at home is a great way to customize the flavors and have a fresh and delicious dip or spread. Here's a simple recipe for DIY hummus:
Ingredients:
- 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (about 1 large lemon)
- 1/4 cup tahini (sesame paste)
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 to 3 tablespoons water
- Optional toppings: extra olive oil, paprika, fresh herbs, or sesame seeds
Instructions:
1. In a food processor or blender, combine the chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, minced garlic, olive oil, cumin, and salt. Blend until smooth and creamy.
2. While the food processor is running, gradually add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. The water helps to make the hummus smoother and easier to blend.
3. Taste the hummus and adjust the flavors as needed. You can add more lemon juice, garlic, salt, or cumin according to your preference. Feel free to customize your hummus with additional spices or herbs if desired.
4. Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl and drizzle with a little extra olive oil. You can also garnish it with paprika, fresh herbs, or sesame seeds for added flavor and presentation.
5. Serve your homemade hummus with your favorite accompaniments such as pita bread, pita chips, fresh vegetables, or use it as a spread in sandwiches or wraps.
Leftover hummus can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 4 to 7 days. Enjoy your delicious homemade hummus!
